Tuba
Warren Deck was Principal Tubist of the New York Philharmonic from 1979 - 2002, winning the position at the age of 24. Before his appointment to the New York Philharmonic, he held the positions of Principal Tuba with the Houston Symphony and Principal Tuba with the Grand Rapids, Michigan Symphony Orchestra. During his 27-year professional career, he has made numerous orchestral recordings with many of the world’s most renowned conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Kurt Masur. He has also performed many brass chamber music concerts internationally and collaborated on four recordings with The Canadian Brass for the Sony Classical and Phillips labels.
In 1989, Warren made his solo debut with the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall, New York City, performing the world premier of Roger Kellaway’s Songs of Ascent for Tuba and Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta. The piece was commissioned for Warren by the New York Philharmonic.
In 1993, he collaborated with leading tuba players from Europe, South America and the U.S. on the highly acclaimed Tuba!, A Musical Romp, recorded on EMI.
Formerly an artist/teacher of The Juilliard School from 1989 – 2002, he has coached a number of musicians who now hold principal positions in orchestras both nationally and internationally. Prior to Juilliard, he was artist/instructor of Tuba at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston. Residing in Denver, Colorado, Warren taught at Denver University’s Lamont School of Music from 2004-2023 and currently teaches at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Aspen, Colorado.
He is currently a regular conductor of the Denver Brass.
